Autumn Leaf Monday

Long, long ago, in a galaxy far away, I crocheted a bunch of autumn leaves. I think I was addicted to the hand-dyed threads I'd purchased online back in about 2010 or so (and a small ball of aspen gold I tried to dye myself), but I'd also just finished my annual fall leaf road trip, and I wanted to re-create what I'd drooled over in the high country.

I think I had a project in mind at the time, but I don't remember. I remember staring at leaves I'd shot and trying different stitch combinations to shape my crochet to match my favorite autumn leaves.

I pulled my crocheted leaves out earlier this year, and I've been staring at and studying them for months now, wondering what I should do with them. Now that our leaves are beginning to change hue, it feels like a good time to play with autumn-colored thread again. I didn't make a white one, and I didn't make a teal one, but I did re-create one and write the pattern to share with you today!

You may do whatever you'd like with leaves you make from this pattern, but you may not sell or republish the pattern. Thanks, and enjoy!

Finish: This project does not necessarily need to be stiffened, but here are instructions, in case you choose to preserve its shape. Tape wax paper or plastic wrap to top of empty pizza box. Pin leaf to box on top of wax paper or plastic wrap.

If using glue, mix a few drops of water with a teaspoon of glue in small washable container. Paint snowflake with glue mixture or desired stiffener. Wash paintbrush and container thoroughly. Allow leaf to dry at least 24 hours. Remove pins. Gently peel leaf from wax paper or plastic wrap. Attach 10-inch clear thread to stem, weaving in end. Wrap fishing line around tree branch (or tape to ceiling or any overhead surface) and watch leaf twirl freely whenever you walk by! Leaf also may be taped to window or tied to doorknob or cabinet handle.
