Autumn Leaf Monday

Here we are, halfway through October, and I'm just now realizing, "Oh, yeah, this is Breast Cancer Awareness Month!" It used to be a very big deal to me, and I'd paint my blog pink and do a pink snowflake. I've been so focused on autumn leaves, I forgot all about October. Turns out there are some pink leaves out there, though!

I've seen some gorgeous pink in leaves throughout my years of gold-chasing.

And autumn features other pinks...

You may do whatever you'd like with leaves you make from this pattern, but you may not sell or republish the pattern. Thanks, and enjoy!

Finished Size: 1.75 inches long
Materials: Size 10 crochet thread, size 7 crochet hook, empty pizza box, wax paper or plastic wrap, cellophane tape, water soluble school glue or desired stiffener, water, small container for glue/water mixture, paintbrush, stick pins that won't be used later for sewing, clear thread or fishing line

Barberry Leaf Instructions

Ch 10.

Row 1: 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across for a total of 9 sc.

If you're not reading this pattern on Snowcatcher, you're not reading the designer's blog. Please go here to see the original.

Round 2: Turning to work across bottom of Row 1, 3 sc in same ch as last sc, 1 sc in bottom of next sc, 1 hdc in bottom of next sc, 1 dc in bottom of next 4 sc, 1 hdc in bottom of next sc; turning to work back across top of Row 1, 4 sc in bottom of next sc, 1 sc in next sc, 1 hdc in next sc, 1 dc in each of next 4 sc, 1 hdc in next sc, 1 sc in next st; sl st in next sc; to make stem, ch 6, 1 hdc in 3rd ch from hook, 1 sc in next ch, sl st in each of next 2 ch; sl st in next sc; bind off. Weave in ends.

I wanted to make a headband, scrunchie or necklace without cutting the thread by continuing after finishing one first leaf but didn't have time. The technique does work, though. For the scrunchie, I did the stem sc around a hairband as well as the ch spaces. Here are modified instructions for Round 2 should you desire to experiment.

Multiple Leaf Round 2: Turning to work across bottom of Row 1, 3 sc in same ch as last sc, 1 sc in bottom of next sc, 1 hdc in bottom of next sc, 1 dc in bottom of next 4 sc, 1 hdc in bottom of next sc; turning to work back across top of Row 1, 4 sc in bottom of next sc, 1 sc in next sc, 1 hdc in next sc, 1 dc in each of next 4 sc, 1 hdc in next sc, 1 sc in next st; sl st in next sc*; to make stem, ch 6, 1 hdc in 3rd ch from hook, 1 sc in next ch, sl st in each of next 2 ch; sl st tightly in next sc. Second Leaf and Beyond: Ch 11, 12 OR 13 (I varied the number of ch in between each leaf), repeat Row 1.

Repeat Round 2 and Row 1 to desired length, ending with Round 2.

Stem: After final leaf, sl st in next sc, [sc in next connecting ch (or in each of next connecting ch), one more sc around connecting ch, 1 sc in next leaf], repeat bracketed instructions to end of project; bind off. Weave in ends.

Finish: This project does not necessarily need to be shaped, but instructions are provided for your convenience. Tape wax paper or plastic wrap to top of empty pizza box. Pin leaf to box on top of wax paper or plastic wrap.

If using glue, mix a few drops of water with a teaspoon of glue in small washable container. Paint snowflake with glue mixture or desired stiffener. Wash paintbrush and container thoroughly. Allow leaf to dry at least 24 hours. Remove pins. Gently peel leaf from wax paper or plastic wrap. Attach 10-inch clear thread to stem, weaving in end. Wrap fishing line around tree branch (or tape to ceiling or any overhead surface) and watch leaf twirl freely whenever you walk by! Leaf also may be taped to window or tied to doorknob or cabinet handle.

Autumn Leaf Monday

Leaves so beautiful, towns are named after them! Here are some favorite shots from years gone by:

Individual leaves are stunning, but when they cover a mountainside...

I may not get to see the aspens in all their glory this year, but, oh, how I love autumn!

You may do whatever you'd like with leaves you make from this pattern, but you may not sell or republish the pattern. Thanks, and enjoy!

Finished Size: 2 inches long
Materials: Size 10 crochet thread, size 7 crochet hook, empty pizza box, wax paper or plastic wrap, cellophane tape, water soluble school glue or desired stiffener, water, small container for glue/water mixture, paintbrush, stick pins that won't be used later for sewing, clear thread or fishing line

Aspen Leaf Instructions

Ch 9.

Row 1: 1 dc in 3rd ch from hook and in each of next 6 ch, ch 2; turn.

Row 2: 1 dc in each dc across for a total of 7 dc; ch 2, turn.

Row 3: 1 dc in each dc across for a total of 7 dc. Do not turn.
If you're not reading this pattern on Snowcatcher, you're not reading the designer's blog. Please go here to see the original.

Round 4: This Round will be worked all the way around square just made. Leaf shape is more important than stitch count, so do not stress about stitch count. Just try to maintain leaf shape as you work around. 1 hdc in same st as previous dc, 1 sc in same st, working around side, 2 sc across, ch 2, 1 sc in same sp as previous sc, 2 more sc across, working across bottom, 1 sc in starting ch, 1 hdc in same st, 1 dc in same st, 1 dc in each of next 3 ch, 1 hdc in next ch, 1 sc in next ch, working across side, 3 sc across, ch 9, 1 dc in 3rd ch from hook, 1 hdc in next ch, [yo and draw up loop through next 2 ch, yo and draw through all 3 loops on hook (sc dec made)] 2 times (stem made), 2 more sc across side, working across top, 2 sc in next dc, 1 hdc in next st, 1 dc in each of next 3 st, 1 hdc in next st, 1 sc in next st; bind off. Weave in ends.

Finish: This project does not necessarily need to be stiffened. Instructions for stiffening are provided as an option.

Probably one of my favorite leaves at fall. You may modify the tips by working ch 3 and sl st into 2nd ch from hook instead of ch 4 and sl st into 3rd ch from hook to make them less pointy. I wanted to try it both ways, and I actually like both.

You may do whatever you'd like with leaves you make from this pattern, but you may not sell or republish the pattern. Thanks, and enjoy!

Finished Size: 3.5 inches long
Materials: Size 10 crochet thread, size 7 crochet hook, empty pizza box, wax paper or plastic wrap, cellophane tape, water soluble school glue or desired stiffener, water, small container for glue/water mixture, paintbrush, stick pins that won't be used later for sewing, clear thread or fishing line

Sugar Maple Leaf Instructions

Make magic ring.

Round 1: 8 sc in ring; sl st in starting sc. Do not pull magic circle too tight.

Row 2: Ch 2 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc in same sc as sl st, [ch 3, 3 dc in next sc] 3 times; ch 2, turn.

Row 3: 2 dc in next ch 3 tip, ch 3, 3 dc in same tip, [1 sc between next 2 dc, in next ch 3 tip work (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc)] 2 times; ch 1, turn.
If you're not reading this pattern on Snowcatcher, you're not reading the designer's blog. Please go here to see the original.

Round 4: 1 sc in each of next 2 dc, ch 4, sl st in 3rd ch from hook, 1 sc in next ch, 1 sc in next dc, in next ch 3 tip work (3 dc, ch 5, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch, hdc in next ch, dc in next ch, 3 dc), 1 sc in next dc, ch 4, sl st in 3rd ch from hook, 1 sc in next ch, 1 sc in each of next 2 dc, sl st in next sc, 1 sc in each of next 2 dc, ch 4, sl st in 3rd ch from hook, 1 sc in next ch, 1 sc in next dc, in next ch 3 tip work (2 dc, 1 tr, ch 5, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, 1 sc in next ch, 1 hdc in next ch, 1 dc in next ch, 1 tr, 2 dc), 1 sc in next dc, ch 4, sl st in 3rd ch from hook, 1 sc in next ch, 1 sc in each of next 2 dc, sl st in next sc, 1 sc in each of next 2 dc, ch 4, sl st in 3rd ch from hook, 1 sc in next ch, 1 sc in next dc, in next ch 3 tip work (3 dc, ch 5, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch, hdc in next ch, dc in next ch, 3 dc), 1 sc in next dc, ch 4, sl st in 3rd ch from hook, 1 sc in next ch, 1 sc in next dc, 1 sc in next ch (2nd ch of Row 3 ch 2), 3 dc around post of next Row 2 dc, sk next Round 1 sc, 3 dc in next sc, ch 10, 1 hdc in 4th ch from hook and in each of next 2 ch, 1 sc in each of next 3 ch, sl st in next ch, 3 dc in next Round 1 sc, 3 dc around next Row 2 ch 2, sl st in top of next Row 3 dc; bind off. Weave in ends.

Finish: Today's crocheted leaf looks better stiffened, at least to me, but feel free to shape instead with a light mist of water if desired.

Autumn Leaf Monday

Long, long ago, in a galaxy far away, I crocheted a bunch of autumn leaves. I think I was addicted to the hand-dyed threads I'd purchased online back in about 2010 or so (and a small ball of aspen gold I tried to dye myself), but I'd also just finished my annual fall leaf road trip, and I wanted to re-create what I'd drooled over in the high country.

I think I had a project in mind at the time, but I don't remember. I remember staring at leaves I'd shot and trying different stitch combinations to shape my crochet to match my favorite autumn leaves.

I pulled my crocheted leaves out earlier this year, and I've been staring at and studying them for months now, wondering what I should do with them. Now that our leaves are beginning to change hue, it feels like a good time to play with autumn-colored thread again. I didn't make a white one, and I didn't make a teal one, but I did re-create one and write the pattern to share with you today!

You may do whatever you'd like with leaves you make from this pattern, but you may not sell or republish the pattern. Thanks, and enjoy!

Finished Size: 2.5 inches long
Materials: Size 10 crochet thread, size 7 crochet hook, empty pizza box, wax paper or plastic wrap, cellophane tape, water soluble school glue or desired stiffener, water, small container for glue/water mixture, paintbrush, stick pins that won't be used later for sewing, clear thread or fishing line

Round 2: Sl st into next ch 3 sp, ch 2 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc in same sp, ch 3, 2 dc in same sp, 1 sc between next 2 dc, [in next ch 3 sp work (2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc), 1 sc between next 2 dc] 4 times, 3 sc in each of next 2 ch 3 sp, 1 sc between next 2 dc, sl st in 2nd ch of starting ch 2.

Round 3: In next ch 3 sp work (2 sc, 1 dc, ch 2, 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 dc, 2 sc), sk next 2 dc, 1 sc in next sc, sk next 2 dc, in next ch 3 sp work (3 dc, ch 2, 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 3 dc), sk next 2 dc, 1 sc in next sc, sk next 2 dc, in next ch 3 sp work (5 dc, ch 2, 1 sc in 2n ch from hook, 5 dc), sk next 2 sc, 1 scc in next sc, sk next 2 dc, in next ch 3 sp work (3 dc, ch 2, 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 3 dc), sk next 2 dc, 1 sc in next sc, sk next 2 dc, in next ch 3 sp work (2 sc, 1 dc, ch 2, 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 dc, 2 sc), sk next dc, 1 sc in next sc.
