Making Waves

While I was waiting for the backing for one of my recent twin quilts to arrive, I stitched together the dozen sea life blocks I'd cut many years ago using leftover Jelly Shelly strips, also from quite a while back, as sashing. I'd cut the layer cake blocks while making ocean-themed quilts for some of my grandkids, nephews and nieces, for friends' grandkids and for Project Linus; I thought they'd make a fast and cute child quilt one day. I didn't want this to become an addition to my already too-long WIP list, so I thought I could dig out the rest of the Jelly Shelly fabrics and cut 12 more blocks for the backing and use up yet more of the leftover strips as sashing.

I didn't have a longarm when I cut out the ocean blocks. I probably would have done straight-line quilting if I'd put the quilt together back then.

While I was cutting out the shell blocks for the backing, I thought this would make great practice on the longarm. I thought maybe I could figure out a way to draw little fishies or maybe even shells. I confess, once I got the sandwiched top and bottom on the longarm frame, I was tempted to do wavy ocean lines because it would be faster and easier. I was sort of stymied by drawing fish with the longarm!

But once I got the longarm threaded and ready to go, I decided I should stick to the original plan and try to practice more and gain more confidence. I don't really like my fish design (at least yet -- hopefully they will get better as I go), but I do think this is better than wavy lines. I hope to have this new old project finished this weekend so I can get back to real WIPs. I really would like to finish (at least) three WIPs from my list this quarter!

And, of course, it would be nice to chalk up yet another WIP finish for Devoted Quilter's 100-day WIP challenge.

  1. Using up leftovers is almost as good as finishing a WIP. :-) Nice work! One of my sons is called Linus. I love the name and this project.

    All the best,

  3. Kudos to you! Both for using up more leftovers and for sticking with your plan to “get some practice” in! Hooray!
