Alexander's Quilt

Grand nephew Alexander made his debut yesterday... breach via Cesarean section!

And his dinosaur quilt is now in the mail!

Alexander's quilt also is my first finish (of three!!!) for Devoted Quilter's 100-day WIP challenge.

The front panel of the quilt initially was for one of the grandchildren of my neighbors last year who have tirelessly helped with my backyard landscaping project. After I finished one of the three quilts to show my appreciation, I learned two of the kiddos did not want dinosaurs after all. One wanted dragons, and the other wanted sea life.

The back of the quilt is the final leftovers of a Fossil Ridge dinosaur quilt I made for one of my grands back in about 2018. (I may have two or three of those Fossil Ridge layer cake blocks left...)

Alexander's mom wanted to do a dinosaur theme for her first son's nursery, and I initially planned to quilt baby dinosaurs into the solid blocks of that quilt, but chickened out because my free-motion quilting skills were not too strong. After I finished quilting Alexander's quilt with simple wandering diagonal lines, I realized I could have done dinosaurs or dinosaur tracks. I'm still a bit shaky on the longarm, but practice makes me better and more confident.

This actually was the first time I tried using a ruler to quilt straight lines. That's another skill I'm apparently going to have to practice because the ruler-quilted lines did not look professional or straight at all. I'd rather learn to draw with the longarm than learn how to draw straight lines with it. Next quilt, perhaps...

  2. Congratulations on your sweet little grand nephew, and on his awesome dinosaur quilt! The fabrics are perfect, both front and back.

  3. Remember -- we are our worst critics. Your lines won't make much difference to the baby... he'll just love the dinosaurs and be happy everything stays together! I think it looks great.
