Fleeced

(affiliate links to my designs)

I've been crocheting in the evenings while listening to inspirational podcasts. I've purchased several of my Spoonflower designs on polar fleece through the years when an awesome sale hit, and I typically would just hem them and stick them in my Etsy shop.

I can't remember when I decided a crochet edging would be more special, but I've been doing it for a while now, and I guess because I so often use thread (for snowflakes), crocheting with yarn seems more relaxing.

The above fleece probably is the final patriotic item I'll be able to finish before the 4th of July, but I'm so pleased with how it turned out.

All the snowflake fleeces are created with my own photographs of my own crochet snowflake designs. I have really enjoyed collaging the images I've shot over the years to create what, to me, is beautiful snowflake artwork. I'm still kind of in shock that I just finished my 913th snowflake design!

Shorts and Stripes

My most favorite pair of shorts were whipped up a few years ago with leftovers from a quilt I made for one of my nieces. I decided I should do the same type of thing now with my patriotic leftovers so I have some really cool shorts to wear next month. Well, and the rest of this month, too!

I've heard noises in the house late at night a couple of times in the last week. I wondered if another uninvited visitor had discovered the clandestine entrance I had tried to block off... Even though it's not October, I did NOT go down into the basement to investigate.

Using my patriotic stash meant I had to go down into the basement to go through my stash. Please don't be any critters down there!!! I was pretty nervous at first. I found three boxes of crafts busted open and upside down on the basement floor. I visually inspected the roof and upper edges of the unfinished basement but saw no evidence of creatures having fallen through. Or living in the basement. (No droppings, chewed boxes, scratch marks, nests...)

This does hasten my cringing impulse to make absolutely certain nothing can ever again gain basement entrance without my permission, but I'm going to need the guys from church who are often asking what they can do to help to help! Still just a bit anxious, I inspected the overturned boxes and the surface where they'd been perched prior to being dislodged. Apparently, the box they'd been on top of had expanded/bulged over the years, and the split-sides boxes eventually just toppled. That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

AI images for humor only; I have no pets

One of the overturned boxes contained a bunch of yarn left over from back in the day when I was bear-addicted. I plucked the turquoise yarn before sealing the box and returning it to its now flat and level resting place. I don't know what I'm going to make with the turquoise yarn yet, but I love the color and can't wait to use it.

After the other two boxes were checked, sealed and settled back on top of the adjusted and resettled larger box, I had to move six more heavy boxes to access the giant stash bin that holds all my pink stash and all my patriotic stash. (Really missing my Chief Box Mover!) Ten minutes later, I was replacing all the boxes and so excited to dive back into my patriotic stash. I have more ideas than just shorts, too! Plus, this is the first time I've been excited about sewing and designing since I lost my beloved Lizard. Eight weeks, if anyone is counting.

Cutting strips from my patriotic fabric stash made me miss Joanne's for the first time. I wasn't a regular customer, but I certainly visited when I needed one more color or one more theme fabric in a rush. They always had a pretty decent variety of various holiday fabrics. Thankfully, I had enough strips without any repeats, so I got by with what I have in my stash because I used black on sides of the right front panel I didn't have enough patriotic yardage to fill. Using what I have instead of buying more is always rewarding.

Even though my favorite shorts have lasted for years of wear and through multiple washings, I learned my lesson about clothing seams after my most recent handmade dress. I cut my patriotic jelly roll strips at three inches instead of two and a half to make sure my fabrics don't unravel upon first trip through the laundry routine. I topstitched, too, for an added measure of peekaboolessness.

Once I finished assembling the shorts, I wasn't sure I had elastic. I really didn't want to have to buy more. Initially, all I could find was several packages of quarter-inch elastic. Finally, beneath my fleece selvedges, which still need to be sewn together for a future project with a giant crochet hook, I found an entire unused package of 3/4-inch elastic. I finished the shorts in a day. I can't tell you how long it's been since I was able to finish much of anything in one day!

On Time

I'm still not sure how I feel about using AI to design fabric, but I do like how this quilt turned out.

My Spoonflower fabric arrived Wednesday. I finished the quilt Saturday. She was born Sunday.

I got to present the quilt Tuesday.

I got this one done on time because I used AI to design the fabric. I knew it was the only way I could finish a brand new quilt that fit the pink bow theme quickly.

It feels good to be timely again. I still miss Lizard more than words can say. But that's because I love intensely. Without love, there would be no grief.

Final Seams

The pillow to go with Lizard's final quilt took only two or three hours to finish, but it took me a lot longer than that to just sit down and do the project. The donors have been so patient, for which I am so appreciative.

I finally got the squares lined up in a layout I thought Lizard might have liked. and then sewed them. I was then utterly amazed at the size difference before and after stitching. I had thought this was going to be a giant pillow! I used scrap leftovers to stuff it, so it has a heavy feel. Kind of cool, in my opinion. But it does make it take longer to dry after washing. Ugh!

Lizard's Final Quilt

Three weeks ago, I wasn't sure I could ever touch my sewing machine again. I'd been trying to teach Lizard to quilt again as art therapy.

He picked out the guacamole fabric, and he did the design. I cut the batting and the solids, but he put all the charm square layers together. Meticulously.

I laid the unfinished project out on the floor to try to finish it a couple of days after Lizard's Celebration of Life. All I could do was look at it and cry for about three days.

He was able to do only the X's. He couldn't do the seams. We got only halfway through the project before he had to go into the hospital. He had planned to let me try to sell the finished quilt for him.

I finally finished it last week after two full days of working on it. I found out I can use my sewing machine again. It was painful at first, but it got easier with each block. I think Lizard would have been proud of me for sticking with it until I finished.

I posted on social media that I was thinking of selling the rag quilt in my Etsy shop with all proceeds going to The HealthWell Foundation, which made it possible for Lizard to take an extremely expensive medication for nearly two years. The Foundation helps many people afford life-saving medications. I think Lizard would have wanted that.

Within four hours of posting, I received a text from a charitable fan who'd made a generous donation to the Foundation and who asked if they could have the quilt. I will be delivering it in person this weekend. I think Lizard would be dancing with joy.

End of the Line

She's done. 34 inches. And no more. For now.

I remember how excited I was when I first started Mercurina. I remember planning a whole family of temperature snakes. I truly loved this little lady until about halfway through February.

Our weather has changed. I did not like using the same colors over and over. I wanted a variety, I didn't do a crochet temperature project (or even a digital one, for that matter) last year because I wasn't sure life would allow me the luxury of daily upkeep. I thought things would be easier this year.

On the bright side, she's done. And even though she doesn't have as much color variety as a typical Colorado January and February would have provided, she is beautiful. It's possible I might start working on another snake if things quiet down a bit. But for now, she's an only lonely child, and I'm so thankful to be done with her.

Sigh of Relief

The plate cozy came out PERFECT! The casserole cozy could have been better, but the recipient loved it. And both are done. Finally!

So now I can actually finish other projects without guilt. Such as my cosmos fleece...

And a fleece scarf!

In the Pink

It's finally done!!! And the baby isn't six months old yet! I'm getting (slowly) back on track!

This quilt was so fun, start to finish. I loved shooting flowers in my garden, sometimes on the ground on my belly. (Not knowing at the time I had rattlesnakes sharing my living quarters!!!) I loved composing the Spoonflower cheater panel. I loved piecing the back with the only pink charm square pack I had in my stash. I loved piecing the borders with leftovers in my stash. And oh, how I loved quilting this one!

I think I've already reported that I had to take the longarm into the shop last fall because I hadn't used it in more than four years, possibly longer than that. I wanted to make sure everything worked right. I'd had trouble with tension and timing the last time I used it. I picked it up from the shop in October, and I almost felt as if it needed another tune-up before I used it this month because it sat so long again.

But everything works fine. My first free-motion quilt in years just a week or so ago got me back into the groove, and my goal for this quilt was fewer mistakes (which I proudly achieved!!!) and more fluidity. I feel like I'm getting the hang of driving Ringo again! This quilt made me LOVE quilting again!
