Snowflake Monday

I am without internet access as I write today's pattern, and I'm without computer access for a couple of days as I plan this out. I also do not have my pizza box-snowflake factory with me because I'm still trying to finish dinosaur egg/snowflake-covered rocks for my grands, with delivery next weekend!!!

So I thought it might be the perfect time for another blog post about covering rocks with crocheted snowflakes. Because I will not be able to stiffen this week's flake until I have access to my supplies again, I'll slightly modify one round and add a round to last week's pattern so I can cover a bigger rock, and I'll just have to find an appropriately sized rock to cover!

Then I'll try to add a photo of the actual stiffened snowflake once I'm able to perform my glowing glue duties.

You may do whatever you'd like with snowflake-covered rocks you make from this pattern, but you may not sell or republish the pattern. Thanks, and enjoy!

Finished Size: Approximately 3 inches from point to point
Materials: Size 10 crochet thread, size 7 crochet hook, clean round or oval rock about the same diameter as the snowflake pattern you are using.

SPECIAL STITCHES:

Popcorn Stitch (pc)

Work 5 dc in designated st, take loop off hook, insert hook through top loop of 1st dc and replace loop on hook, pull loop through top of 1st dc.

Belated Dino Egg Rock Cozy Instructions

Make magic ring.

Round 1: [Pc in ring, ch 3] 6 times, omitting last 2 ch of final repeat; 1 dc in top of starting pc to form 6th ch 3 tip of Round. Pull magic circle tight.

Round 2: Ch 5 (counts as 1 dc and [ch 3), in next ch 3 sp work (1 dc, ch 3, 1 dc)] 5 times; ch 3, 1 dc in next ch 3 sp, ch 1, 1 dc in 2nd ch of starting ch 5 to form 6th ch 3 tip of Round.
If you're not reading this pattern on Snowcatcher, you're not reading the designer's blog. Please go here to see the original.

Round 3: Ch 5 (counts as 1 dc and ch 3), 1 dc over post of dc directly below, [sk next ch 3 sp, in next ch 3 point work (1 dc, ch 3, 1 dc, * ch 5, 1 dc, ch 3, 1 dc), ch 3] 6 times, stopping * on final repeat, ch 2, 1 tr in 2nd ch of starting ch 5 to form 6th ch 5 point of Round.

Round 4 Snowflake: Ch 2 (counts as 1 dc), 4 dc over post of tr directly below, [ch 5, in next ch 5 tip work (5 dc, ch 3, 5 dc)] 5 times; ch 5, 5 dc in next ch 5 tip, ch 3, sl st in 2nd ch of starting ch 2; bind off. Weave in ends.

Round 4 Rock Covering: Ch 2 (counts as 1 dc), 4 dc over post of tr directly below, [ch 5, in next ch 5 tip work (5 dc, ch 3, 5 dc)] 5 times; ch 5, 5 dc in next ch 5 tip, ch 1, 1 dc in 2nd ch of starting ch 2 to form 6th ch 3 point of Round.

Round 5: Ch 5 (counts as 1 dc and [ch 5), sk next 4 dc, 1 dc in next dc, ch 5, sk next ch 5 sp, 1 dc in next dc, ch 5, in next ch 3 tip work (1 dc, ch 5, 1 dc)] 6 times, omitting last dc and last ch 5 of final repeat; ch 2, 1 tr in 2nd ch of starting ch 7.
NOTE: Snowflake should now be about the same size as your rock. If your rock is bigger, you may continue to increase on the tips in Rounds 6 and beyond to desired size.

Rounds 6-desired size: Ch 7 (counts as 1 dc and [ch 5), 1 dc in next ch 5 sp] around; ch 2, 1 tr in 2nd ch of starting ch 7. Continue working in this pattern until cozy is about an inch shy of completely covering rock. I clip the starting tail not too close to center stitching at this point and just leave it hanging inside the cozy. It will be buried by the popcorn stitch center.

Final Round: Ch 2 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc in each ch 5 sp around, inserting rock about halfway through Round then continuing to dc in each ch 5 sp taking care not to scrape hook against rock; sl st in 2nd ch of starting ch 2; bind off, leaving about 3-inch tail. Weave tail in and out of each dc of Final Round. Pull tight without breaking thread. I bind off again here by drawing up a loop, working 2 more ch, then weave end to inside of cozy.

NOTE: Cozy also may be worked with a sc/ch 5 mesh instead of dc/ch 5 mesh. Dc mesh creates a hexie/honeycomb mesh. Sc creates a diamond mesh. Use the mesh of your choice for desired visual effect.
