Snowflake Monday

Just for the fun of it and because I absolutely love variegated purple thread, I tried crocheting a snowflake with two strands. It almost looks as if it's shimmering, in my opinion. I rather like the way it turned out. Don't you?

You may do whatever you'd like with snowflakes you make from this pattern, but you may not sell or republish the pattern. Thanks, and enjoy!

Opaline Snowflake with 1 strand of thread

Finished Size: 3.5 inches from point to point with 2 strands, 2.75 inches from point to point with 1 strand

Round 3: Ch 3 (counts as 1 tr), 1 dc in next ch 10 sp, ch 3, 3 dc in same sp, ch 3, sl st in top of dc just made (picot made), 2 dc in same ch 10 sp, ch 3, 1 dc in same sp, 1 tr in middle dc of next 3/dc group; repeat from * around 5 times, omitting last tr of final repeat; sl st 3rd ch of starting ch 3; bind off. Weave in ends.

Finish: Tape wax paper or plastic wrap to top of empty pizza box. Pin snowflake to box on top of wax paper or plastic wrap.

If using glue, mix a few drops of water with a teaspoon of glue in small washable container. Paint snowflake with glue mixture or desired stiffener. Sprinkle lightly with glitter. Wash paintbrush and container thoroughly. Allow snowflake to dry at least 24 hours. Remove pins. Gently peel snowflake from wax paper or plastic wrap. Attach 10-inch clear thread to one spoke, weaving in end. Wrap fishing line around tree branch (or tape to ceiling or any overhead surface) and watch the snowflake twirl freely whenever you walk by! Snowflake also may be taped to window or tied to doorknob or cabinet handle.

  1. That was a neat way of doing it with the two strands indeed.

    1. Thanks, Pat! Two strands uses up a lot more thread, and the final product isn't as delicate, but I like this for something different!

  2. I like it. For me, it has a maritime feel to it. A sea flake perhaps.

    1. You're right, Lizard! I hadn't planned it in advance, but except for the purple, these colors do have a real maritime feel! Where were you when I was looking for a name for this flake?!? :)

  3. Is there a book I can purchase? I would like to make snowflakes for the seniors in our community that are in the rest home. Some of them have no one to visit them or buy them a gift or have no family members that visit them. For a year and a half as I sat with my mother, I watched as some of them never had a visitor & the only time they ever received anything was at the centers Christmas party, so if I could make them a snowflake for there window, it just might brighten there days ahead. Please let me know. Thank you.

    1. What a wonderful thing you are doing, Dutchie! Thank you for wanting to do something so special and touching and for spreading love with snowflakes! I have been doing a fundraiser to support those living with multiple sclerosis for the past four years, and I do have the previous four PDF booklets I've sent to those who have contributed in my name or my husband's name. I'm still working on this year's booklet; I hope to have it done some time this month. You may read about the previous PDF booklets here (that link will take you to another page in this same Window), and watch here on Mondays for the announcement of this year's booklet. I hope to kick it off in the next couple of weeks.
